◇ The Subjunctive Mood
假設語氣
「虛擬句」，有別於「直述句」與「祈使句」，在英語中已經逐漸少用。它通常用來表示一種「建議、假設、期望」的語氣，而不是現實中真實發生的情況。常配合的動詞有 suggest、demand、insist、order、recommend 等等，這些動詞後會有一個 that 子句。that 子句的動詞須為「虛擬語氣」，通常為「原形動詞」，但因為含有「建議」口吻，通常也可搭配助動詞 should。
Example：
1. It was suggested that he wait until the next morning.
建議他等到隔天早上。
2. It was demanded that the driver be punished for the accident.
要求那名駕駛必須因為那起車禍而受罰。
3. The teacher ordered that the project be handed in tomorrow.
老師命令那個報告明天要交。
