介係詞與關係代名詞連用
介係詞與關係代名詞連用的概念，先舉一個句子為例：This is the river in which we used to swim. （這就是那條我們以前常常在裡面游泳的河）。 Which we used to swim 是關係子句，用來修飾前面的 river，可是 which 前面怎麼會冒出一個 in？ 其實關係代名詞還會有搭配介係詞的情況，但這到底是為什麼呢？ 我們先把句子改寫成沒有關係代名詞的版本，可以看到是：We used to swim in this river.。因為要表達「在這條河『裡』游泳」，所以要搭配表示「在...之中」的介係詞 in。這時把 this river 拉出來、剩餘的部份改為關係子句後，會變成：This is the river which we used to swim in.，介係詞保留在動詞後面。非正式書信或是文章可以這樣用，但如果是正式文件或是參加高階英文檢定時，就要避免這種情況。以最嚴謹的文法規則來看，句子最好不要以介係詞作結。那這時候 in 該何去何從呢？ 就要把它搬到關係代名詞 which 的前面，變成：This is the river in which we used to swim.。 除了這裡看到的 in which 之外，還會有其他介係詞搭配關係代名詞的組合，如：Sam is talking to the woman./Do you know the woman?。我們都知道，要表達「和某人講話」的用法是 talk to someone，其中有介係詞 to。因此以上兩句話用關係代名詞串起來會是：Do you know the woman whom Sam is talking to?。同前所述， to 放在句尾是比較不正式的說法，所以應該調整介係詞的位置，改成：Do you know the woman to whom Sam is talking?（你認識 Sam 在講話的那個女子嗎？）。 值得注意的是，「關係副詞」可以取代「介係詞＋關係代名詞」。這個概念其實很好理解，例如當我們說 I live in the city. 時，可以用「地方副詞 there」取代「介係詞＋名詞的 in the city」，讓原句變為 I live there.。關係副詞 where 一般來說以可以取代 in which，因此， This is the river in which we used to swim. 也可以改寫成 This is the river where we used to swim.。 關係子句當中常會出現介係詞，而關係代名詞則是該介係詞的受詞。在口語上，介係詞常放在關係子句的句尾，關係代名詞可以省略。而在正式用法當中，介係詞應該放在關係代名詞前，且關係代名詞不得省略。
