片語動詞
兩個片語動詞 fall upon 和 call on，意思分別為「襲擊、降臨」和「詢問、要求」，注意到這兩個片語動詞所使用到的介系詞 on 和 upon，其實兩者的意思相似，都有「在...之上」的意思，用於片語動詞時可以替換，因此 fall upon 也可以寫成 fall on，call on 也等於 call upon。那麼它們有什麼差別呢？upon 比 on 要來的正式許多，在一些情況下，許多使用 upon 的慣用法是不行用 on 替換的，例如 once upon a time 「從前」就不能寫成 once on a time。或者 upon 當作「（某事發生）之後」和「（某事）即將來臨」時，也不能用 on 替換（見例句 3）。
Example：
1. An unforeseeable tragedy falls upon this family.
一個無法預見的悲劇降臨在這家人身上。
2. Protesters call for a complete reform of the social welfare policy.
抗議人士要求社會福利政策的完全改革。
3. Halloween is upon us; time to bring out our best costumes.
