◇ Modals Verbs of Deduction and Speculation
情態助動詞 (對過去事件的推測)
對於「過去事件」的推測，我們可以用帶有推測語氣的情態動詞，例如：must have + p.p.、might have/ may have + p.p.、can't have/ couldn't have + p.p.。而使用哪一種則須看我們對於事情可能性的把握程度決定。假使你確信過去某件事情真的有發生，用 must have、如果我們認為過去某件事只是有可能發生，用 might have/ may have，而當我們認為過去某件事情不可能發生，用 can't have/ couldn't have。 例如 It must have been thinking: "You bloody idiot!" 這句，是說話者認為他絕對是這麼想，但注意，事實上他有沒有這麼想是不確定的，畢竟只是說話者本身的主觀認定。
Example：
1. Oh, good! We've got milk. Jo must have bought some yesterday.
歐，太好了！ 我們有牛奶耶。一定是 Jo 昨天買了一些。
2. Police think the suspect may have left the country using a fake passport.
警方認為嫌犯可能已經用了一本假護照離境了。
3. I thought I saw Adrien this morning, but it couldn't have been him. He's in Greece this week.
我以為今天早上看到的 Adrien，但不能是他。他這周在希臘。
