推測語氣助動詞
英文中常使用某些助動詞來表達對過去、現在或未來某個狀態或動作之發生的「推測、推斷」，而具此類功能的情態助動詞有 must、could、may、might 等。情態助動詞本身並沒有「人稱」和「數」的變化，且大多都不一定能確切表示時態 (tense)，也不能表示動詞的「體」(aspect)，例如正在發生或已經發生的事情，只能表示期待或推測事情的發生。如例句中，which can be a marker of arthritis，can 表示「可能、推斷」，而不是「能力」唷！
Example：
1. At this moment, our teacher must be correcting our exam papers.
這時候，我們老師想必正在批改我們的考卷。
2. There may be some evidence to suggest she's guilty, but it's hardly conclusive.
也許有跡象顯示她有罪，但不怎麼令人信服。
3. This new drug could be an important step in the fight against cancer.
這種新藥可能是攻克癌症過程中賣出的重要一步。
