◇ Modals Verbs of Deduction and Speculation
情態助動詞推斷語氣
could 再搭配一個表「完成」的助動詞 have 通常有兩層含義。第一層是表示你過去有能力可以做到某是，但卻沒有這麼做； could've reached...，表示對過去某件事情的推測，表達事情可能的發展方向，但不見然是很確定的。如果是「確定的」事情，用過去簡單式即可。而 may 或 might 兩者可以僅僅是對「現在的情況」所做的推論，表達可能性。
Example：
1. Julie could have borrowed the book from the library, but she bought it instead.
Julie 原本可以只要從圖書館借那本書就好的，但她最後還是買了。
2. "It's really late now. Why hasn't Anne come back yet?" "She could have got stuck in traffic."
「現在很晚了，為什麼 Anne 還沒回家？」 「她可能是在路上塞車了」
3. Attitudes are much more difficult to identify and may only be revealed in subtle ways.
