虛主詞 - There
虛主詞 There 目的是用來引出、介紹句子原本真正的主詞，通常句構為 There ＋ be 動詞 ＋ 名詞 (真正的主詞) 。虛主詞句型中 there 不會因為名詞的「數」而變化，而 be 動詞則會依其後方接的名詞的「數量」以及整個事件發生的「時間」而改變。例如本課中提及的 there is an element，由於 an element 是單數，故使用單數動詞 is；反之，另外一句 there are particular trends，則因 trends 是複數，使用 are。
Example：
1. There's someone on the phone for you.
有找你的電話。
2. There were some people talking in the middle of the night.
有一些人在半夜的時候在聊天說話。
3. There seems to be a problem with finding a date for the meeting.
找一天開這個會議似乎是很難的事。
